It’s been six weeks since Madeline joined us! My, how the time has flown by. Every single day has been magical but a few moments have shone a little brighter than others. Here are six of them in chronological order.
1. Seeing her for the first time
Just minutes after she was born the nurse placed my baby on my chest. I wanted desperately to love on her but I couldn’t even look. I had torn and my dr. was still sewing me up. It hurt like mad and he kept saying, “It’s imperative that you don’t move. Otherwise we’ll have to do surgery”. I had to use every ounce of energy and focus that I had to stay still and ignore the bundle of sweet perfection sitting on my heart. That was one of the hardest moments I’ve ever been through.
The nurse finally noticed what was happening and gave the baby to her daddy. When the dr. was done I got my baby back. Oh my goodness!!! It was amazing. Probably even more so because of what happened before. I got to see her and touch her and smell her. She had tons of dark straight thin hair, just like her daddy. She also had darker skin like her daddy. She grabbed my finger and I melted like a snowman in summer. Perfect, perfect, perfect. She was perfect. A tiny perfect gorgeous soul straight from Heaven.
2. Watching daddy change her first diaper
All throughout my pregnancy and even before that, Hubs kept telling me that he was not going to change our babies diapers – ever. He said he would make up for it by doing other things. I assured him that it would be okay; I would change them all. But then something changed besides the diapers. The nurse walked in to do the deed. “Go watch, just in case”, I encouraged. He watched for a second and then he took over. He did a great job; a total natural. I teared up and possibly cried a little. He’s been a diaper changing pro ever since.
3. Our first day home
The hospital was great but it got old after the second day and we were ready to get out of there. We drove home and walked through the door. Hubs went upstairs to do something for work on his computer. I took Madie out of her car seat and carried her to our couch. She was asleep and I just sat there holding her. I remember an overwhelming feeling of fresh air and calmness and completion.
That night Hubs and I gave our daughter a sponge bath and put her in warm pjs for the night. He then sat down in the rocking chair in her nursery and grabbed a little book off the book shelf next to the chair. With Madeline in his arms he proceeded to read the book to her while adding his own special touch to it. I stood next to them crying my eyes out. It was the most precious moment of my life. A moment I will remember for ever and always, for sure.
4. Hysterically laughing with family
When Madie was three days old my mom and little sister came to visit and help out for awhile. One night my mom was holding her and I walked into the room. Her and my sister were playing so sweetly with my baby. They had love written all over their faces and voices. I joined them and then we all began to laugh hysterically at her funny faces and sounds. It was late and we were tired. We probably appeared to be drunks to the unknowing eye. Madie looked up at us with a face that said, “you guys are crazy!”.
5. Her first big bath
When she was about three weeks old I was enjoying a bath when Hubs brought her up and they both joined me in the tub. She loved it! A little timid, grabbing onto daddy’s finger, but not afraid. She didn’t cry at all but smiled instead. It was her first time being in so much water and she was so brave. This moment solidified what I already knew. She’s a great baby! We got a good one.
6. The time I made a cake
Week four I invited a friend over and decided to vacuum. That same time Madie woke up and wanted to be held so I did both. I vacuumed the floor while holding my girl. It was amazing how empowered that made me feel! I didn’t think I could be anymore super mom-ish until the next week. Week five I made a cake for the missionaries with one hand while holding and feeding her with the other. Hubs came in and caught me. I thought he would be mad but he was just mad impressed. It was awesome!
